Breast augmentation refers to the procedure where by the breast is made larger usually by placing a breast implant.
Many patients can achieve their goals with breast augmentation alone.
However, Some women have significant sagging of the skin and will need a breast lift to correct it. A breast lift is a procedure whereby excess skin is removed and the skin envelope of the breast is reshaped including lifting the nipple to a higher level.
A breast augmentation can normally be performed through a relatively small incision. Usually the incision is between an inch and an inch and a quarter in length. A breast lift however results in incisions around the areola, the brown skin surrounding the nipple, and connected to an incision between the areola and the fold of the breast. In many cases an incision in the fold of the breast is also required.
Many patients undergoing a breast lift request an implant at the same time to help shape the breast and maintain the shape longer.
It is important to consult a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery who performs breast surgery on a regular basis so that all of your options will be explained and considered.
