Liposuction can be a very frustrating procedure for a lot of patients. Unlike most of the procedures we do as plastic surgeons, with liposuction you do not see your results right away. The swelling does not even begin to go down for at least 3-4 weeks. Expect to slowly see the swelling decrease for at least another couple of months. It can take anywhere from 3-4 months (or longer) to be completely gone. Sometimes it can help to massage any areas that are firm or swollen to help mobilize the tissue fluid. The pain is similarly frustrating. It is common for people to complain of discomfort off and on for a few months. At first, there will be operative pain, and then you will feel more burning, tingling pain as the nerves start to recuperate. All of this is temporary and does eventually resolve. A good sign that the swelling has subsided is if the nerves have fully recuperated and the tissue sensation is back to normal. Make sure you consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon if you are interested in liposuction.
