After deciding what type of implant will be utilized the next important consideration is the size of the implant.
The first step in choosing the right size is to listen carefully to the patient’s goals. The next step is a careful examination of the breasts.
Often measurements are taken either with a tape measure or with the use of computer imaging. An important measurement when choosing size is the diameter of the breast.
Another very helpful technique is the utilization of external sizing implants. These are specially shaped implants which can be placed into the patient’s sports bra. The patient can then view herself in the mirror and see a reasonable approximation as to how she will look post-operatively.
Computer imaging is another very helpful technique. The imaging system will provide a reasonably accurate image of how the patient will look post-operatively.
Using all 3 of these modalities enables the surgeon and the patient to select the right implant with a high degree of certainty.
