(Omaha, NE) If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Non-surgical alternatives to liposuction, including lipo-dissolve and mesotherapy (injection of various compounds into the skin to dissolve fat) are alluring to people across the United States. According to Alan Matarasso, MD, co-author of a recent report in Plastic and Reconstuctive Surgery, “The problem with mesotherapy is the whole technique is shrouded in mystery.” No scientific studies have been published on the safety or efficacy of these procedures.

Additionally, no standardization exists. The types of drugs used vary from location to location as does the frequency and amount of injections. Injections are often administered by non-physician staff. Another concern of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is “where does the dissolved fat go if it’s not suctioned out?” Some physicians speculate the fat is either redistributed in the body or possibly going to the heart. Researchers have also shown that these injections can dissolve the muscle.

The long-term and the short-term effects of these liposuction alternatives have not been proven safe for patients. Currently, liposuction is the only proven method of removing fat safely and effectively. Mesotherapy and other similar non-surgical liposuction techniques are not approved by the FDA, endorsed by the ASPS or currently used by the physicians of Aesthetic Surgical Images.
