Education

Dr. John Heieck attended medical school and completed his residency in general surgery at the Creighton Medical Center. During his two years in the United States Army, he conducted medical research primarily in the field of high velocity body trauma and burn wounds. Dr. Heieck finished his training in plastic surgery at the Baylor Medical Center in Houston before completing an additional fellowship in hand surgery in Los Angeles. He returned to Omaha in 1977 with his family to provide complicated surgical care and cosmetic surgery to patients in our region.

Professional Affiliations

Dr. Heieck is an assistant clinical professor of surgery at both Creighton Medical School and at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He has written numerous articles in medical literature regarding plastic surgery. He belongs to many medical societies, including: the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the Cleft Palate Association, the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Association of Hand Surgery, and the American Society of Outpatient Surgery.

Dr. Heieck is renowned among Omaha, Nebraska plastic surgeons for his experience and achievements. In addition to a busy practice in cosmetic surgery, Dr. Heieck is also the surgical director of the cleft palate team at Boys Town National Research Institute. Dr. Heieck and his wife, Sheila, are the proud parents of six children.

Q & A with Dr. Heieck

What is the first job you ever held?

I mowed lawns and worked as a janitor at a community hospital in Southern California beginning in 6th grade.

Do you have any pets or a favorite childhood pet?

Presently, I have one dog, a Havanese. As a youth, my family had 7 dogs, 2 Siamese cats, a Half Moon Parrot, 750 parakeets, 50 ducks and 1 turtle all at the same time.

What hobbies/pastimes do you enjoy?

I enjoy reading in my free time and following college football. I also love playing with my three grandchildren whenever they visit or when I visit them.

What is your favorite sports team?

Notre Dame! University of Nebraska is a close second.

What made you decide to become a cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon?

My decision was primarily influenced by treating severe facial injuries and my exposure to facial birth defect surgery while a general surgical resident at Creighton Medical Center.
