Otoplasty
The incision is made behind the ear and the cartilage is shaped and curved and held in its new contour with stitches. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia for an older child or adult, and general anesthesia can be used for younger children. The patient can go home the same day. This procedure is permanent and should never have to be redone.
Insurance may cover this procedure.
Ears that are too prominent often serve as a source of ridicule and embarrassment for young children as well as adults of any age. This fairly common condition can be readily improved by a surgical procedure called a setback otoplasty.
